God The Son True Life
Sermon Summary
This message is the second part of a sermon on God The Son. Jesus, was God in the flesh and as such, revealed to us the True God and at the same time the True Life. Last week we talked about how Jesus revealed to us the One True God. This week we discover how Jesus showed us how to live the True Life! The disciples talked about how they had heard, seen and touched The Son of God. We will discuss the the teachings of Jesus on life, and then see how the actual life of Jesus showed us true life. We will close by discussing how the disciples were able to actually touch and be touched by the life of Christ.

Community Group Discussion Guide

1. Some people base the quality of their life on how much or how little material possessions they have. What is fundamentally wrong with such a view of life?

2. Jesus had some very specific things to say about true life. He said we are not to worry about things, even the necessities of life. Why do you think He said this and do you ever struggle with worrying about things?
Matthew 6:25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?
26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ?
28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.
29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.
30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

3. Jesus lived what He preached: Turn the other cheek, pray for those who mistreat you, bless those who curse you, do unto others what you would have them do unto you, and it is more blessed to give than to receive. This is a hard question, but do we live what we teach? Our family knows better than anyone else the answer to this question. What can we do to better match up our words and actions?
Mat 5:14  "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.
Mat 5:15  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
Mat 5:16  In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

God The Son - True Life

Last week we talked about how God the Son came to show us God the Father. He came to reveal to us the True God! Jesus came to earth at a time when different nations had different gods. Some had many gods, and some nations just had gods of convenience who they made up to serve the whims of their fleshly desires. Jesus had come to reveal the True God of the nations. The True, Creator God who is all powerful, all knowing, and all consuming, yet at the same time, the God of love and mercy.
So many misunderstood God. Who He was, what He did, what He wanted. Some thought He was a capricious, volatile, unpredictable, temperamental, mean spirited God, who enjoyed seeing humankind suffer. Jesus came to show the world this was so wrong. He came to show how wrong the world had been about the True God!

Jesus was the living example of God's love, His wisdom, His mercy, His power! Jesus was God incarnate, God in the flesh, the living Word of God! When we learn to relate to God through His Son, certain things will become very clear. Why? Because when you see an example lived before you it becomes much easier to follow. Not only because you are able to witness someone else putting the principles into practice, but also because the one being the example validates and verifies they truly believe what they're teaching! Someone who says, this is the best way to do something and then they do it differently in their life, would cause any thinking person to doubt the validity of their teaching. But Jesus lived what He preached!
And by doing so He showed us The True God, but that's not all…

God the Son came to show us the True Life!

1 John 5:20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true—even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

Eternal life! Do you know when eternal life starts for a follower of Jesus? The day he or she places their faith in Jesus! You see I started my eternal life about 41 years ago! So when my life ends on this earth, it will only be a transition to my life in heaven where I'll never face death again! But what about my life now? How do I live life here? What principles do I live by? How do I make decisions? How do I know what is right and what is wrong? God's Word has a suggestion for us in 1 John chapter 1...

1 John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched —this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.
2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.
3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

What had John and his friends heard? What had they seen? What had they touched? What was this fellowship he was inviting us to become a part of?

What had they heard?

God The Son's Teachings On True Life

They had heard the greatest teacher who ever lived teach lessons on what constitutes true life! Life lived with a purpose that goes beyond the acquisition of things. Life that seeks to understand what is God's higher purpose for me today? Life that matters! God the Son, put it this way...

So many people think life is found in stuff! Stuff's not bad in and of itself, but when stuff is all your life is made of, that's just really sad. Why? A stuffed animal is not a real animal. A stuffed doll is not a real person. And a person stuffed with stuff, has no real life! They're missing out! Let me put it this way. If the inside of you is not right, the outside won't be right either! If you don't pay attention to your soul, the spiritual aspect of your life, nothing else is going to be right. In fact the disciples heard  God The Son speak about this very subject?

Mark 8:35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it.
36 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?
37 Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

Sometimes people in the world feel pity for those of us who have decided to follow Jesus. They think we're missing out on all the fun. They think we're to be pitted, because we "have to" spend time worshipping on Sunday mornings when we could be out there living it up! Well, let me say, they shouldn't knock what they've not tried! Normally I try to stay away from really complex sentences, but I've got one for you today. It's a complex sentence, but not a complicated one, so stay with me on this one...

"I think we have a pretty good time in here and it's extra special when we realize God is the one who gave us life in the first place, and He's the one who was willing to turn around and give His life to save us after we messed up the life He had given us!
Ok, one more time...

"I think we have a pretty good time in here and it's extra special when we realize God is the one who gave us life in the first place, and He's the one who was willing to turn around and give His life to save us after we messed up the life He had given us!"

But some folks just don't get it. And they really think we've lost our minds when we put some of our hard earned money in the basket! "Just think of the cool stuff you could have bought with that!"
Maybe the problem is they have not heard what the disciples heard when Jesus said...

... ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” Acts 20:35b

It is more blessed to give than to receive. Remember what I said, It's easier to learn from someone who practices what they preach, and I can assure you God practices what He preaches! He knows it's more blessed to give than to receive, and boy does He give! You can't out give God! And let me say this…If God didn't give me one material blessing, I would still be thankful for the spiritual blessings He gives me which help me to experience true life! And it's a life that truly satisfies! You see, when we gather as the church for worship, or when we spend time alone with God and His word, we dine at His table. His table is filled with life giving truth. Most of you have read the story or heard the story of Jesus feeding thousands with a little boy's lunch. The little boy had five small barely loaves and two small fish. Jesus fed the people because they were hungry and He had compassion on them. He fed them all and they still had twelve baskets left over.

But He used this story to teach a very important lesson. And this leads us to our second way in which God the Son showed us the true life. It is found in what the followers of Jesus had seen! What had they seen?

God The Son
Practicing What He Preached!

The disciples had heard Jesus teach about true life. But they also saw Jesus live true life! After Jesus fed the thousands, Jesus could have seized the opportunity to set up an earthly kingdom. It's what the people wanted. But Jesus wasn't concerned with a temporary earthly kingdom. What would it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul. Listen...

John 6:14 After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

It had to be tempting for Jesus to take the easy road. Just let them make you an earthly king. Use your power to overthrow the Roman empire and you've got it made. However, Jesus knew what they people needed and it was not another earthly king. They needed true life, and eternal life. Jesus knew His death on the cross was the only way to He could offer true life to the spiritually hungry and thirsty people!
Later when the crowds found Jesus, listen to what Jesus told them…

John 6:25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
30 So they asked him, “What miraculous sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?
31 Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ’”
32 Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.
33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “from now on give us this bread.”
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

I guess feeding several thousand people with 5 small loaves of bread and two small fish wasn't miracle enough. They wanted another miracle! They were missing the truth that Jesus was the true life! There's so many ways in which God The Son  showed the world true life. He had no home, He had no stuff. The food for His miracle was borrowed from a little boy. The boats he sailed in or preached from, were borrowed. The donkey He road on was borrowed. The upper room where He had the last supper was borrowed. The tomb He was buried in was borrowed. And the life He lived only lasted 33 1/2 years, but what a life He lived. And that life keeps on giving these many years after He lived it. Why? Because of the motivation of His life. Listen...

John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

In other words, Jesus came so that we could have life and have it to the full. And He was a beautiful example of the life He wanted us to experience. Listen again to what John stated in 1 John 1:1-3

So they heard, they saw and they touched. What did they touch?

God The Son - The True God & The True Life

The disciples of Jesus lived with Jesus for those brief years of ministry. Their lives had touched the life of Jesus and His life had touched them in a permanent and everlasting way. The disciples had personally witnessed Jesus loving the unlovable, loving His enemies, feeding the hungry, touching the lepers, hanging out with sinners, forgiving them and showing them new life! They saw Jesus refusing the pull of the world.
And how did He do these things? The disciples had seen Jesus get up early to go and pray. They saw Him pray during the storms. They saw Him pray before every major decision of His ministry and then some of them heard Jesus pray for His persecutors from the Cross!

So the disciples had touched and been touched by the true life Jesus lived. And then after His resurrection, Jesus allowed the disciples to literally touch Him so they would know He was truly alive, real and really alive! Luke 24:36ff

Luke 24:36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.
38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?
39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”
40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.
41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”
42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.
44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”
45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.
46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 You are witnesses of these things.
49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

(By the way, that would be God The Holy Spirit, and we'll talk about Him next week...)

50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them.
51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.
52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.

They worshiped Him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy! And what were they so excited about? They had finally realized that Jesus was God The Son and that He had shown them the True God and the True Life! He had told them they would be witnesses of His truth to others. And through their witness we have discovered The True God and the True Life! We are now a part of the fellowship of the Gospel and we are also witnesses of the True God and the True Life!

One of the people the early disciples would reach with their witness was Saul of Tarsus, a persecutor of Christians, who would accept Christ as Savior and later write these words to a young man named Timothy. I'll close with his powerful words...

1 Timothy 6:17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.
19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

Pray!
