Face Time a Time to Change
Sermon Summary
This message delves into the changes that begin taking place in an individuals heart and life when they spend face time with God! The text that is used to develop the message is 2 Peter 1:1-11. Six major changes are tracked with more detailed changes explored in each area. When a person spends face time with God and genuinely seeks God’s will for their life, it’s amazing the changes that will take place, both subtle and obvious. Spending face time with God will cause your focus in life to change, along with your priorities, your motivation, your inspiration, your goals, your impact, and your passion. And all for the better! You can’t spend time with the Almighty God of the universe and walk away unchanged! However, God has given us all a choice. We don’t have to spend face time with Him, and it breaks His heart when we don’t, but we are the biggest losers when we don’t! Spend some face time with God today and watch the positive changes begin in your life!

Community Group Questions

1. What are some noticeable changes you find in your life when you spend face time with God? Remember, some may be subtle while others may be more noticeable.

2. It’s human nature to focus on ourselves, but face time with God changes that! How so and why? Isaiah’s example is a bit long, and pretty epic, but it has some truths concerning face time with God and our need to focus on Him.
Isa 6:1  In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple.
Isa 6:2  Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.
Isa 6:3  And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory."
Isa 6:4  At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.
Isa 6:5  "Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty."
Isa 6:6  Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.
Isa 6:7  With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for."
Isa 6:8  Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"

3. When we focus on God, we begin to understand the importance of living by God’s power, provision, and knowledge, as well as living for His glory. Peter says “through these things, we can participate in the divine nature of God and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires!” Using the following passage, explain what Peter was saying...
Ephesians 4:22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;
23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds;
24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

4. Our new self and our new attitude causes us to pursue new life goals. Read the following passage and discuss why these new life goals are superior to other goals one might pursue.
1 Peter 1:5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;
6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;
7 and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.

Such true words, because no words could ever convey all our God is! We can spend our whole life and never fully understand just how great our God really is! However, if we spend our lives seeking to know God by spending face time with Him we gain a confidence that He hears us when we pray, speaks to us through His Holy Word and shows us things we would never see on our own! But there's another very vital aspect to face time with God! When a person spends face time with The Almighty God of the universe, it will have an impact in some way. It will either draw you closer or it will repulse you further away and you are the one who makes the choice by the attitude of your heart.

In other words, face time with God is a time to change! You can't spend face time with God and walk away the same person. Here's the deal...You'll either realize your great need for God and desire to spend even more face time with God or you'll decide you would rather do your own thing and the desire to spend face time with God will fade away! Let's pray and ask God to let our face time with Him lead us to positive change in our lives!

Father God, You are awesome and we need a daily dose of Your awesomeness!! We need face time with You so You can change the things in us that need to be changed. We know You want to make positive changes in our attitudes, hearts, minds and daily lives! Changes for Your Glory for our better! Your love for us and Your will for us can change us in ways that will be amazing and in ways that can make our lives effective, powerful and full of meaning. Hide me behind the cross, and speak Your words by way of Your Holy Spirit! In Jesus Name I pray! Amen

Get your Bibles out if you have them. We're going to look at a passage of Scripture found in 2 Peter chapter 1. We'll be looking at the first 11 verses. We'll take these verses one by one and track some of the changes that take place when we spend face time with God. Let's dive right in and hear what Peter had to say about face time with God and the resulting change!

Change #1
It's not about me!!

2 Peter 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:

I no longer live to serve me, I live to serve Jesus!

It's interesting Peter stated first that he was a servant of Jesus Christ and secondly that he was an apostle of Jesus Christ! This is one of the first major changes that takes place once a person turns their life over to Jesus. They desire to serve. It's no longer, "what's in it for me?" It's, "how blessed am I? I should be serving the Lord because He deserves my loyal service! He died for me, I should live for Him!"
And let me say, this is not about earning your salvation, it's about being so grateful for His grace and mercy, you want to serve!

The writer of the book of Hebrews put it this way...

Hebrews 9:14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!

I no longer depend on my goodness, I depend on the righteousness of Jesus!

Peter said he was a servant and an apostle "through the righteousness of our God."
We must understand how critical it is we depend on His goodness. Our goodness, compared to the righteousness of God is as filthy rags. But good news is found in God's Word to us in Galatians 2:20-21...

Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!”

So change #1 is it's not about me! I no longer serve me but Him! I no longer depend on my goodness, but His. And...

It's no longer about my big faith, but about my big God!

Peter said He had received a precious faith. He didn't brag about his big faith that he developed because he was so super spiritual! No, he said he had received a precious faith! When you spend face time with God your faith grows because you realize how awesome and mighty is your God! The Psalmist put it like this in Psalm 89:6-8

Psalm 89:6 For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings?
7 In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him.
8 O LORD God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

Change #2
It's all about Him!

2 Peter 1:3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

I now live by His Power!

Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,
21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

I now live by His Provision!

Living by God's provision. Peter said God's divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness. What do we need to really have life? Is it stuff? Is it fame and fortune? Is it worldly power and position? Absolutely not! God will meet our physical needs, but our spiritual needs are our most critical need. The writer of Romans put it this way...

Romans 5:17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

I now live by His Knowledge!

2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

I now live for His Glory!

Yep, it's no longer about you when you live for God's glory instead of your own! And even when we suffer because of our love and stand for Christ, we can be thankful. I think about our brothers and sisters in parts of the Middle East. Keep praying! Peter put it this way in his first letter…

1 Peter 4:12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you.
13 But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.
14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

There's yet another change that happens when we spend face time with God...

Change 3#
I accept His promises and reject the world's lies!

2 Peter 1:4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

Peter is a master at transitions! When he says through these He has given us his very great and precious promises, He's saying through the power, provision, knowledge and glory of God, God has made promises to us that let us do two things...

We may participate in the divine nature!

Ephesians 4:22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;
23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds;
24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

We may escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires! You can overcome the temptations of this world. Don't let Satan lie to you and tell you your hopeless! You are not. If you think you can't win even with God's help, Satan will walk all over you. The lead singer of Creed, found this out the hard way. Listen...

"Some people can deal with misfortune perfectly. Others have to stumble and fall and learn those lessons the hard way. That's the kind of person I am, but I've always been able to get out of tough situations by changing things for the better. And I thank God for instilling that in me now. With some of the demons I've let in my life, if I didn't have that internal desire to change the negatives into positives, I don't think I'd be alive today…" That’s Scott Stapp lead singer with the band Creed talking about his struggle with drugs, alcohol, and depression.

He co-wrote the lyrics to a song called "Rain". Listen to these words...

"Can you help me out, can you lend me a hand? It's safe to say that I'm stuck again
Trapped between this life and the light
I just can't figure out, how to make it right...
A thousand times before I've wondered if there's something more... something more...

I feel it's gonna rain like this for days

I tried to figure out, I can't understand...
What it means... to be whole again...

You've gotta remember what Jesus said to His disciples...

John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

How many of you in this room want that abundant life?

Face Time with God will bring the change you want and need. Face time with God will bring you...

Change #4
A new set of life goals!

1 Peter 1:5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;
6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;
7 and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.

The Goodness Goal!

Ephesians 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)
10 and find out what pleases the Lord.

The Knowledge Goal!

Psalm 119:66 Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I believe in your commands.

The Self-control Goal!

1 Peter 5:8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

The Perseverance Goal!

Galatians 6:9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

 The Godliness Goal!

1 Timothy 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

 The Brotherly Kindness Goal!

Jeremiah 33:3 The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.

Should we not reciprocate and do the same thing for others?

The Love Goal!

1 Corinthians 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

Change #5
My life begins to make a difference!

2 Peter 1:8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.

Effective and Productive!  

Face time with God changes everything. Jesus stated it in a very vivid way in John's gospel...

John 15:4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

By the way, did you notice, we don't make fruit, we bear fruit. Now I know that's a problem in South Louisiana where we make everything from birthdays to groceries, but when it comes to being effective and productive spiritually, Jesus makes the fruit, and we bear it!

Face time with God helps us understand that and also gives us...

Clear Vision!

It's beautiful how the goals God gives us in our face time with Him, help us see just what God has done for us!

Ephesians 4:32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
5:1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children
2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Change #6
New Passion, New Confidence and New Hope!

2 Peter 1:10 Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall,
11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

And this is not talking about working for our salvation! Peter is talking about how our life validates our heart! If nothing changes when you come to Jesus, somethings wrong.  Peter says we become "All the more eager!!" I love that. In face time with God we receive a…

New Passion

What does that new passion look like. The Psalmist describes it beautifully...

Psalm 40:8 I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”
9 I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O LORD.
10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly.

New Confidence

Peter says, make your calling and election sure! My new confidence doesn't come because of my good works, but through them. What am I saying? When I begin living a changed life because of my face time with God, I begin seeing Him work in all the circumstances of my life. As this happens, my confidence in God grows. My knowledge of His grace and mercy grows! I realize even more how I could never be good enough or do enough in and of myself, but through His love, His power, His provision, His wisdom and His glory, I am made whole and can do all things through Him who gives me strength! Now, Peter is not saying we never fall. We do, and God's mercy is always there to lift us right back up, but, Peter is saying if we are spending face time with God and doing the things He's asked us to do as followers of Christ, and keeping our eyes on Jesus then we won't fall! We fall when we take our eyes off Jesus and get distracted by the things of this world and when we listen to the deceptions of the enemy. God will forgive us, and this doesn't mean we lose our salvation, but I'm here to tell you it hurts when I fall! The older I get the less I like pain! We don't have to live in defeat! We can live in victory in Jesus! And Peter says we have a wonderful hope for the way we will be received in heaven someday...

New Hope

2 Peter 1:11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

This is not a hope so someday hope, it's a know so one day hope! A rich welcome into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!!!
That will be the ultimate change resulting from our face time with God! Let's pray!!!
