Missions - Go

Community Group Discussion Guide

1. Have you ever been on a mission trip? If so, tell us what held the most meaning to you. (It doesn’t have to be an overseas mission trip)

2. What was most meaningful to you Sunday as you listened to the testimonies?

3. What was the most challenging thing to you Sunday morning as you listened to the testimonies?

4. Have you ever considered the fact that God wants you to be on mission wherever you live, work or go to school, and may even call you to go on an overseas mission trip someday?

“After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field” Luke 10:1-2

5. What hiders you from living a life on mission for the Lord?

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Bonus Question: We lost one of our most dedicated men at the church this past week. Mr. Wayne Fisher lived his life on mission for God. He had been on several foreign mission trips, but lived every day as a missionary. The impact of his life was evident as many hundreds of people came to pay their respects. Why do you think he had such an impact on others?

Philemon 4 I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, 5 because I hear about your love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus. 6 I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. 7 Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.

What a song!

"I am surrounded by the arms of a Father

I am surrounded by songs of deliverance!"

Some of you in this room have faced unbelievable tragedy this past week, but I know you've been surrounded by the arms of a loving Father and this morning by songs of deliverance! There's an empty seat in this place today, and an empty spot in every heart that had come to know and love Wayne Fisher. But we must remember, Wayne has taken his seat in glory in the presence of his Savior, his Lord, and his best friend Jesus. So I guess you could say he's got the best seat in the house this morning! His precious wife Kim is a godly woman with great faith and is trusting God completely and has been an inspiration to many, but I know she deeply appreciates your prayers and needs them to continue for her and her family. And Wayne had so many friends, close friends, keep them in your prayers as well. Pray for the other Pilot's family as well. Don Pechon was the first guy I took lessons from back in 2006. A great guy!

Now let me say this one thing about Wayne Fisher, and I'll say it again on Tuesday. Some would say that he lived to fly. But I would put it this way… Wayne loved to fly, but he lived for Jesus! And his greatest mission in life was to let others know that his Jesus could be their Jesus just for the asking! So what could be more appropriate for today than we talk about missions and being willing to live a life on mission. We've got some people here this morning who heard God's call to go and they answered the call! I want us to pray and ask God to allow His Holy Spirit to speak to each of our hearts today through the testimony's of this very special group of missionaries!

"Father God, without Your strength, Your peace, Your promises, Your love, and Your presence, how could we make it? How could we continue to breath? How could we find the purpose to continue to live especially when we face unspeakable loss? We might continue to exist, but we don't want to just exist. We want to live lives that matter. Lives that make an eternal difference! Help us to be willing to live lives on mission to take your good news to a world that doesn't know the blessed hope we have found in You! Help us to be willing to share the joy, the meaning, the purpose, and the excitement that can be found in a personal relationship with You! These missionaries on this platform today have been on mission for You. As they touched lives, their lives were touched! I trust you to speak to our hearts in a way today that will cause us to desire to go out into our world and live on mission for you!

In Jesus Name I pray and I believe! Amen!!

Testimonies of the missionaries via interview questions.

Welcome home to our missionaries.

We are so proud of each one of you! I'm going to ask you guys and gals some questions and I want you to feel free to share your heart.

What are some of the reasons you decided to go on mission to Haiti?

Were there any things that tried to prevent you from going?

What moved you most while you were on mission?

What are some of the ways you may change your life as a result of being on mission?

Do you feel like you or the team made a difference in any one's life there in Haiti?

Would you go back/would you encourage someone else to go?

What are some of the spiritual truths you feel you were taught or that you understand better now that you've been on this mission trip?

If you want to read with me our text is Luke 10:1-3.

“After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.”

Why did Jesus say "Go, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves?" I believe Jesus was letting His disciples and us know that being on mission for God is not always an easy task! It's rewarding! It's exciting, and God gives the strength, but there are times when it's not easy and other times when we will meet opposition. And of course we wonder what people will think!

Forget what others think! Obey God's call on your life to serve and you will be surprised at the new level of meaning, and purpose you will discover! Today we have some very special folks who have answered the call to go! We're going to hear from them and I believe you will be moved and challenged!

Now, here's a question you might be asking today. Do I have to go to another country to be a missionary? The answer is no indeed! Your mission field may be in your own home, your own street, your school, your place of work. Did you know that suicide in the U.S. is at a thirty year high? People need loving, godly, caring missionaries who are willing to go to them in love with the love of Christ!

One morning I was crossing a very high bridge on my way to church. I noticed a young lady at the top of the bridge and saw that she was crying. I went down and pulled off the road and walked back up to where she was. I asked her if she was okay. She told me her and her boyfriend had a fight the night before and he just put her out of the car and she had been there all night. I told her Jesus loved her and she quickly told me God had never shown her any love. I replied that sometimes the way God loves is through other people and how He had led me to take the time to let her know He loved her. I told her I was a minister at a Church and that I wanted to help her. I asked her where she lived and if I could give her a ride home. She told me she lived close to the church which was about 8 miles away. She said she would appreciate a ride, then quickly added "but I don't want to talk about Jesus!" I said that's fine, I just want to help you and make sure you get home safe. We walked down the bridge, got in the car. As I started driving, she started crying, looked at me and said "please tell me about Jesus!"

She asked Jesus to come into her heart that day and began a new life!

So your mission field may be something right down the street!

Let's pray!
