Mother's Day 2017

Sermon Summary

In our world today, it seems that some no longer want to celebrate God's plan of male and female, but it is clear from Scripture that God celebrated both (Genesis 1:27-28). The woman was taken from the man, and after Adam, every other man was born of woman! So there's this beautiful connection and interdependence that exist between male and female. And because God created the concept of womanhood and motherhood there are some beautiful attributes of God found in both. This message examines some of the attributes of God to be found in Godly Motherhood! Various passages of Scripture are used to show how several attributes of God can be seen in Godly Motherhood.

Community Group Discussion Guide

1. Share a memory of your Mom that helped you better understand the love of God.

2. As difficult as it must sometimes be, a Mom seems to always be available for her children. When you think of this characteristic, how does it relate to your experience with God's availability to you in your life?

Hebrews 4:16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

3. It's not hard for us to imagine a mother's attentiveness to the needs of her child. She hears them crying and she's on it! Have you ever thought about the fact that God has the ability to hear the cries of our hearts even if there is no physical sound? Discuss what it means to you to know that you have God's very close attention.

Psalm 18:6 In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.

4. There were three other attributes of Godly Motherhood discussed in the message: accepting, affirming, and adoring. Choose one that has a particular meaning for you and tell us why you chose that one.

Godly Motherhood!

"With all creation I sing, Praise to the King of Kings You are my everything, and I will adore You!" Do you know why we adore God so much?" The answer is easy. Because He adores us so much! We love Him because He first loved us. Today we're going to examine this concept by looking at Godly Motherhood, so let's pray and ask God to help us to learn deeply today! PRAY!

Godly Motherhood! Now before you guys tune out, I was going to title this message…Things Father's can learn from Mother's! God is always referred to as Male in the Bible! Now Ladies, don't be offended by that. All that it means to be female is contained in the mind of God because God's Word says this...

Genesis 1:27-28 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and
the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground. ”

Beautiful! In this verse we see that God created motherhood. He told the male and female He had created to be fruitful and increase in number! In our world today, it seems that some no longer want to celebrate God's plan of male and female, but it is clear from Scripture that God celebrated both. The woman was taken from the man, and after Adam, every other man was born of woman! So there's this beautiful connection and interdependence that exist between male and female. And because God created the concept of womanhood and motherhood there are some beautiful attributes of God found in both. On this Mother's Day we will examine some of the attributes of God to be found in Godly Motherhood! As we get ready to do this, I want us to turn to another passage of Scripture. It's pretty amazing. It's found in Isaiah 66. It's the first time in the Bible we see the writers compare some of God's attributes to the attributes of a Mother! Again, God created womanhood and motherhood so we shouldn't be surprised God would inspire His prophets to make the connection.

The people of God had only recently returned to Jerusalem from the Babylonian exile. God was speaking to the people who had been faithful to Him during those very hard years, and He wanted them to know they would once again be comforted in Jerusalem! Listen to what He said...

Isaiah 66:12-13 For this is what the LORD says: “I will extend peace to her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flooding stream;
you will nurse and be carried on her arm and dandled on her knees. As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.”

God wanted His people to know that the beautiful and extremely strong love that a mother has for her children was the kind of love He had for His children. He said, "As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you!" So this morning, I want us to learn some things about God by thinking about "Godly Motherhood!" Now when I say Godly Motherhood, I know there are no perfect moms in the world, and some have allowed the things of the world to cause them to neglect their God-given responsibility to be good examples of God's love to their children. However, there are many, many who are wonderful examples of Godly Motherhood still in our world today, so we're going to talk about those examples.

Right about now some of you guys are thinking, "Ok, I've get a break today, Pastor Larry is talking to the ladies, so I'll just chill out and let him preach to them!" Hey, guys, I thought about calling this sermon, "Things Fathers could learn from the Mothers!" We're going to be talking about attributes of God that can be found in Godly Motherhood, but should also be found in any follower of Christ! So with that in mind, let's look at some of those attributes and I pray we all will discover why we should follow the example of Godly Moms! I remember how my Mom was always...

Available

Have you ever noticed how Mom's just seem to always be there when you need them? When you were little and cried out in the night and Mom came to the rescue. I remember so many times as a little guy when I would have a bad dream and there was Mom to stroke my little forehead and tell me everything was going to be okay! And the times when I would say, "I'm thirsty, could I have some chocolate milk" and in the middle of the night she would mix me up some chocolate milk. Now that's being available! And somehow Moms seem to be available to fix every meal, and wash all the dirty clothes and clean the whole house, and still have time to be there when you need them. There have been a few times when I've had to handle those responsibilities when my wife was sick. You know what I told her? "Sweetheart, you don't get paid enough!" She just smiled. Have you ever thought about what things would be like if Mom decided to completely take a day off and was not available to do any of the things she usually does? Check this out…

Video plays here!

Wouldn't be a pretty situation in most homes if Mom didn't do what she does! But thank God, most Mother's are available and willing to do so many extra things. And for those working Moms, I just don't know how you do it. Thank you for all you do! Now I told you I was going to point out some similarities to the attributes of God. Aren't you glad, that like our Mom's, God is always available?

In fact God's Word puts it this way...

Psalm 46:1-3 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.Selah
Psalm 46:7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

And in the New Testament it puts it like this...

Hebrews 4:16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

And these beautiful words in 2 Corinthians...

2 Cor 1:3-4 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

So like a Godly Mother, God Himself is always available to us! He's always there for us. In fact God never takes a day or night off from being available to us. Mom's at least get a nights rest from time to time, but listen to what the Psalmist tells us about God...

Psalm 121:1-8 I lift up my eyes to the hills— where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD watches over you—the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm —he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

Mom's are not only available, but a Godly Mom is also...attentive.

Attentive

They are not just there physically, but they are in the moment. They are there to hear the cries, the questions, the needs and to give answers where they can and comfort when they can. You remember when you were a little kid, or when your kids were little. Thousands of questions. The questions don't stop for little growing and inquisitive minds. They want to know everything, right now! "Mommy, how does this work? Mommy, what does this mean? Mommy, why is this broken? Mommy can I have this? Mommy, And Mom's are bent down to say, "Okay, what's your question sweetheart? What did you want to know? What's wrong? What do you need? Here, let me help you with that! Let me show you. Mom's are so attentive and it seems they just know when somethings wrong! It seems they anticipate the needs of their children sometimes before they even ask. Does this not remind you of the attributes of God? Listen to these two verses in Matthew...

Matthew 6:7-8 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

And I love what the Psalmist states in his song in Psalm 18...

Psalm 18:6 In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.

Like a loving mother, God is attentive to your cries, your questions, your concerns. He hears you when you pray, and even knows what your needs are before you pray. He wants you to talk to Him and He wants you to know you can come to Him, and that He desires to listen to you!

Psalm 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry;

Wow, that's good stuff!! Now you see why I said today's message was not just for Moms, it's for all of us. However, there's another characteristic of Godly Moms that reminds me of God. Mom's are so...

Accepting

Have you ever heard someone say, that person has a face only a mother could love. That's a mean thing to say, but you know what, Mom's really are very accepting of their children. They have an unconditional love for their young, their offspring, their kids! Maybe a little too much sometime. Sometimes Moms put up with things they maybe shouldn't or shouldn't have to! But let me say this, I'm so glad my mother didn't reject me! If there were ever a candidate for rejection, I think it was me. ADHD off the wall, and a rebellious and mean spirited young teenager. However, my Mom never stopped loving me or praying for me! I'm so grateful! Looking back, I realize now how important her faithful love and support for me was. I'm sure it was her love for me that made me hesitant to cross certain boundaries and that probably saved my life on more than one occasion. Now let me bring up a few other things that might help us understand just how this quality of a mother's acceptance has played into our lives.

Baby's are so cute and cuddly, but then there's the diapers and the spit up, and worse, and you know, Mom just doesn't even flinch. Her kid needs her and she's on it. Now I know dads many times handle things as well, but we flinch, hold our nose and fight the gag response, but not moms. We just have to admit they are just tougher than we are when it comes to stuff like this!

Mom's love us so much they do whatever it takes to clean us up when we smell bad, and they love us even when we are just plain bad. While they can work miracles with us when we are little and need to be cleaned up, or lovingly disciplined, when we get to the place where we are getting spiritually dirty they can still love us but they can't save us from our sins. We need a Father God who loves us with the deep, deep love of a mother and is willing to accept us as we are, but not leave us the way we are. We need a God who is willing to clean up our spiritual mess and I'm glad to say we have just that kind of God. Once again we turn to Scripture to see some of the attributes of God found in Godly Motherhood: especially in regards to acceptance.

You may know by now that the following passage is one of my favorites, but it completely explains God's love for us even though we wreak of sin and have become filthy...

Romans 5:6-11 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Reminds me of an old Hymn...

Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me, And that Thou bidst me come to Thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot, To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, though tossed about. With many a conflict, many a doubt, fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind; sight, riches, healing of the mind,Yea, all I need in Thee to find, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve; Because Thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Another beautiful attribute of God found in Godly Motherhood is the quality of being...

Affirming

Mom's often say things like: "You can do this! You got this! I have no doubt you can do this! I believe in you! Don't listen to those negative voices, they don't know you like I know you! Don't be discouraged, everything's going to work out, just keep trusting the good Lord! Besides Jesus, I'm your biggest fan! You did so good and I'm so proud of you!!"

Now let's see if God is anything like our mothers in this area.

Jeremiah 1:5-8 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” “Ah, Sovereign LORD,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am only a child.” But the LORD said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the LORD.

And how about this one...

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Or this one...

Zephaniah 3:15-17 The LORD has taken away your punishment, he has turned back your enemy.
The LORD, the King of Israel, is with you; never again will you fear any harm.
On that day they will say to Jerusalem, “Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands hang limp.
The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love,
he will rejoice over you with singing.”

How powerful is that? God rejoicing over you with singing! I would call that affirming in the most amazing way. It's like a Mother singing to a small child to bring comfort, peace and encouragement! God singing to me! Just the thought of that affirms my worth to God! Thank You Lord! And you know what? When God sings to us we will likely be so encouraged we will want to sing to Him!

Isaiah 49:13-16 Shout for joy, O heavens; rejoice, O earth; burst into song, O mountains!
For the LORD comforts his people and will have compassion on his afflicted ones.
But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me.”
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne?
Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.

And that leads us to our last attribute of God that Godly Motherhood helps us to understand more fully.

Adoring

How much a Godly Mother adores her children! She shows her love by caring for them, but also by holding them, and as our passage in Isaiah read...

Isaiah 66:12-13 you will nurse and be carried on her arm and dandled on her knees. As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.”

A mother's love is so strong. Even in the animal kingdom this is so. You've heard it said that you would never want to meet a bear robbed of its cubs. A mother's love is fierce and at the same time caring and nurturing. God's love for you is no different!
Jeremiah spoke of God's love for His people in Jeremiah 31:3. Listen...

Jeremiah 31:3-10 The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness. I will build you up again and you will be rebuilt, O Virgin Israel. Again you will take up your tambourines and go out to dance with the joyful. Again you will plant vineyards on the hills of Samaria; the farmers will plant them and enjoy their fruit. There will be a day when watchmen cry out on the hills of Ephraim, ‘Come, let us go up to Zion, to the LORD our God.’ ” This is what the LORD says: “Sing with joy for Jacob; shout for the foremost of the nations. Make your praises heard, and say, ‘O LORD, save your people, the remnant of Israel.’ See, I will bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the ends of the earth. Among them will be the blind and the lame, expectant mothers and women in labor; a great throng will return. They will come with weeping; they will pray as I bring them back. I will lead them beside streams of water on a level path where they will not stumble, because I am Israel’s father, and Ephraim is my firstborn son. “Hear the word of the LORD, O nations; proclaim it in distant coastlands: ‘He who scattered Israel will gather them and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’

Yes God is our Heavenly Father, but the Bible teaches us very clearly that He loves us with the same kind of intense love that a Godly Mother has for her child. My prayer today is that each of us here will understand better the love of God because of what we've learned about Godly Motherhood, but also, that each of us, male or female, father or mother, would seek to love as God loves. By being...
